Meditation and mindfulness retreat with 20 financial advisors!
As I mentioned in my profile, I am walking the path towards the light while working in an industry that has yet to see it. The finance world has been responsible for some greedy and selfish behavior through the years. However, I am happy to report that through this shift, even this will change.
A few weeks ago, in the beautiful Catskill mountains, I went through a four day retreat with 20 financial advisors. If you've ever had the pleasure to be around an advisor for an extended period of time, they are typically very type A. Always on the go, moving and shaking. Probably the last group you'd expect at this retreat.
As we sat down for our first meditation, I looked around the room and half of the people in there had some part of their body shaking and moving. Was this group really going to be able to settle into this?
As our teachers, Terry and Janice worked their magic, slowly but surely, one person after another was lulled beyond all of the worldly distractions to a special place. A place where one can connect with their TRUE self. Their essence! In this state, realizations were popping left and right. People shared that they did not spend enough quality time with their children or realized they live life in constant fear and anxiety.
Leading up to the third day, people began to relax, as our teachers had another step for us. It was time for twenty four hours of silence. Now if you've done prolonged retreats, this may sound simple, but to this group, they were terrified. This was far from their comfort zones.
For me, these twenty four hours were bliss. We meditated, did yoga, walked around the beautiful campus, ate wonderful meals and did all of this with complete mindfullness. Every minute was enjoyed and experienced. Little did I know, in the minds of my peers, there was much less peace and more angst. For most, they felt they eventually settled into themselves and became comfortable. Others were so relieved by the ending of those hours.
The fourth day was spent exploring their new found tools and discussing how this could be brought back. As I listened to commitments made by this group, I was amazed. People I may have been nervous sharing my hobbies of meditation and spirituality with before, were talking about how they wanted to spend time daily in meditation.
I am happy to report that weeks later and through a stressful time in our business, our group emails continue to be positive and show profound, life long changes made in each of us, fortunate enough to attend. These are the pioneers leading to brighter days ahead, not just in our industry, but in our world!
